This exquisite necklace features a beautifully hand engraved snake head which is much larger than most examples available on the market today. As you can see, it looks stunning when worn. It comfortable to wear.
During the Victorian Romantic Period, the snake was symbolic of eternal love and devotion. After all, Albert gifted Victoria with an engagement ring with a snake Motif! Snakes have also been associated with wisdom and protection, and when depicted grasping it's own tail they symbolize the cyclical aspect of life.
The combination of gold and turquoise was very popular during the Victorian era, and oh so desirable today with collectors. When found, it was lacking a chain, but I was able to source an antique Vermeil chain which suits it and makes it more affordable than an all gold necklace. Vermeil is gold over silver. Most Victorian snake necklaces are choker length which are uncomfortable and not suited for modern wear. This necklace has approximately 17" of wearable length, measured to the hole which the clasp inserts into and not including the clasp. This fabulous necklace is comprised of all antique Victorian era parts. The snake head was tested by my jeweler and is just under 14k. There two tiny chips to the turquoise on the two smallest stones which can be seen with a loupe but not the naked eye (please see last photo) The dangling heart is 9 k gold and enameled. The heart is circa 1900.
