Victorian Large Garnet Carbuncle Rose Cut Diamond Star Fringed Locket Pendant 14k

This impressive Victorian locket is flawed, yet still so lovely. The large oval garnet, often referred to as a carbuncle, has a crack across it. It is held in by the bezel and the diamond star shaped setting. That being said, it is still a wonderful piece of jewelry. The tapered fringe in in perfect condition, as are the rose diamonds in their settings. The bail, also 14k, is a later replacement, but suits it perfectly. This pendant is also a locket, and contains what is probably hair. A jeweler could access the compartment if you would like to place your own memento.
This pendant is circa 1870. It could have been a memorial piece, or a love token. We can only imagine the grand lady who proudly wore this locket! Revivalist jewelry was all the rage, and large pieces of jewelry like this one complimented the fashions of the day.
This locket was jeweler tested and determined to be 14k gold, It appears to have a high karat plating, which was commonly done during this period in America. It measures 2 1/4" in length, and would look beautiful on a cord or on a chain like the one shown, which is sold separately in my shop.
