It is pretty rare to find 1/6 gold fill, and an anchor link like this one! Modern gold fill is 1/20. Some antique watch chains were 1/10, but this one  is 1/6 meaning that approximately 16% of its weight is gold. This watch chain has a fabulous look, and at approximately 8.25" it makes a perfect unisex bracelet. It is a rich yellow gold color, not pink gold. There is a link of there circles from which a charm could be suspended, perhaps an anchor! Due to the thickness of the gold fill, the chain has very little base metal peeking through, mainly on the base of the "dog clip" clasp. Because it looks like solid gold, someone filed into it in two spots to test it sometimes in its past, but this is not readily apparent when worn. (See photos) This detailed and realistic anchor link is very hard to find and is associated with late 19th and very early 20 th century chains. The dog clip is stamped JFS SONS 1/6 which was Sturdy and Sons, which formed in 1865. The business, which was located in Atteboro, Massachusetts, was known for its high quality gold filled chains. I have seen 1/10 stamped on their pieces, but never 1/6, which indicates a higher amount of gold. Gold fill is not to be confused with gold plating, which is thin and not long lasting.
