These scarce early micro mosaic earrings may have originally been another piece of jewelry. They were mounted on these antique Victorian gold filled earrings via a "cold connection" by my clever jeweler. The central plaque of the earrings and the festoon chains are gold filled, and I had 14k wires and a 14k drop added to the earrings. I think that they came together perfectly in style and composition.
The micro mosaics themselves are a marvel! When examining the faces, you can even see a glint in the eye of the awake angel. During the Victorian period, archeological discoveries such as ancient Roman ruins sparked the imagination of the 19th century jewelers who crafted magnificent jewels based on the ancient styles for their sophisticated clientele. These mosaics were likely bought in Venice while on a Grand Tour of Europe by a wealthy lady. The blue background and gold stars are seen in the architecture in the Piazza San Marco. Needless to say, early micro mosaic pieces depicting angels are extremely rare, and this type of antique jewel cannot be replicated.
