It appears to be a thick layer of gold over silver. The top of the reverse appears to be silver. A safety clasp was added at some point. I will be looking for thick satin cord to cinch under the pin back so it can be worn as a necklace.

I have never seen the hot air balloon motif in this type of brooch before. The hot air balloon was invented in 1789 and was quite an innovation and curiosity at the time. I love the three dimensional dangle with it's tiny glass cover which holds a tiny scrap of brown fabric. Even the faceted connecting ring is special. The approach is 1 and 7/8 of an inch in length and 1 in in width. A small amount of solder is apparent in places on the edge of the top section of the brooch, but this is not readily apparent when held in hand. The brooch is hand engraved with tiny floral motifs. I just love how dynamic the design is, with the balloon section curving downward ward and the basket section curving upward. You will never see another morning pin like this, so if you collect this is your opportunity to own a very interesting piece!

https://jeanpapinantiquejewelry.com/products/early-victorian-hot-air-balloon-mourning-brooch-with-glazed-locket-circa-1845
